The secret trial, the faux trial. These are some shady people that the enemy used to falsely accuse Jesus and murder him. The details that Luke includes aren’t exactly easy to keep up with but looking at some other parts of the Gospels allows us to fill in some blanks.
Read: Luke 22:63-71
Notes:
- Jesus being mocked was prophesy. See Psalm 22:7-8
- Matthew 26:67
- Mark 14:65
- Ironically, they were mocking Jesus for being prophetic and the section we read yesterday was Peter denying Jesus…of which Jesus predicted.
- Before the council is technically a second trial because the trial in Matthew 26:57-68 was illegal because it was held at night.
- According to Jewish law, trials must begin and end in the daylight.
- Jesus knew they wouldn’t believe because he’d already been found guilty and this trial was just for show. They were pretending.
- They were judging him now, but one day Jesus would be seated at the right hand of the power of God and judge them.
- They didn’t even try to have witnesses at the daytime trial because they couldn’t find witnesses for the night trial.
