Are you emotional about this week yet? Just me? Every year it seems like I learn more and more about the celebration of Easter. Truly, motherhood has changed the way I look at the sacrifice that God made. Grateful for seasons and the continuing opportunity to learn more. Today we’re still learning about the crucifixion. There’s a lot of references made to Old Testament prophecies today. If you’d like to learn more about how Jesus fulfills OT prophecies, check out the Guarantee study.
Read: Luke 23:32-43
Notes:
- Calvary means “place of a skull.”
- “there they crucified him” seems like a simple statement but in the context of when this was written, people knew the depth of those 4 words. No one needed to explain that this was a long and painful way to suffer and die.
- Romans were not concerned with humanity and were focused on making this a show of might to put fear into citizens and control the people. They wanted this to be a cruel punishment.
- Crucified between two criminals, two sinners. See Isaiah 53:12, Matthew 27:38, & Mark 15:27
- The people didn’t believe in who Jesus was so they kept asking him for more ways to prove himself.
- Jesus asks God to forgive his enemies, just like he previously preached about. See Psalm 109:4
- The Roman soldiers took everything from him. His dignity, his life, and his clothes. See Psalm 22:18
- Jesus was told to save himself over and over. But because he did not save himself, he instead saved us.
- They mocked him and gave him sour wine or vinegar to drink. See Psalm 69:21, Matthew 27:34, John 19:28-30
- Of the criminals with him, one mocked him and the other asked for forgiveness and shared his belief in Jesus and God. The thief says one day and Jesus says today.
