The Parables // Salt & Light
Salt and Light might be my personal favorite parable. Or at least one of my favorites. There’s a Mama & Littles Bible Study on the parable also. But it’s one that is easily explained to all ages. Salt adds flavor and preserves, while light dispels darkness.
Read: Matthew 5:13
Notes:
- Salt is added flavor
- Salt is a preservative
- Salt can also kill in quantities too large.
- See also Mark 9:50, Luke 5: 33-35
Read: Matthew 5:14-16
Notes:
- Lights were made to shine
- Lights were made to dispel the darkness
- God created us to be lights (reflections of His light) so that the world would be able to see his glory.
- Good works are done but not to earn anything from God, only to display His love, grace, and mercy upon us. We are reflecting His beautiful light.

Discuss with Kids :
- Let’s taste some salt! Describe it.
- What happens when we add salt to foods?
- Pick an object that God created (flower, leaf, grass). Sit in a dark room and ask everyone to describe the object. When it’s not possible, shine a light on it. Talk about how the light takes away the darkness and the light makes it easier to see the glory in God’s creation.
- How can we be reflections of Christ in our world? Home? School? Community?
